Be in the Wildlife: Zine
During my residency in Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP), I worked with 4th graders from Yucca Mesa Elementary school. Along with park rangers, I accompanied the students on a field trip to Hidden Valley in JTNP. The day after our park visit, I conducted interviews with the kids. The text in the zine shares their answers to my questions. I found their responses compelling – some joyous while others share a somber perspective on the future of JTNP. The photographs in the zine were made on the way to and during the field trip. The photographs were interpreted and altered based on my observations and the 4th graders insights about the park.
The zine was made on a risograph machine at Print St. Pete over a 4-day period in summer 2021. I spent time learning the quirky machine, experimenting, trouble-shooting, and printing using orchid, yellow, and green soy-based inks. Before they were cut, each sheet of paper held 4 zine spreads. The double-sided sheets were fed back through the risograph machine after drying for each ink color per side. Many sheets took the trip through the machine 6 times. Sometimes everything lined up.
