Recently on the way to a dentist appointment I drove past a strange, ugly, and somewhat comical fiberglass statue displayed prominently on Interstate 65 in Nashville. When I returned home I jumped online to find out more information about the statue. I discovered that the man depicted was Nathan Bedford Forrest, a general in the Confederate Army. I was quite upset to learn that he made his fortune as a slave trader and is said to have helped to start the KKK. I was not surprised (and quite pleased) to learn it had been shot at several times. The statue is so unflattering that it causes you to wonder if it is an homage or a put-down. Which is perfect because it says a bit about Nashvilles history but also something about its present.
